A child’s physical transformation is often a reflection of all that’s happening within them. Just as healthy food and medicine revive a body, acceptance, love, patience, and grace revive a soul.
This is Emily’s story
Emily was one of the first 20 children who moved into The Shelter in December 2015. This was her first time having a bed and full meals. Born at home and having never received immunizations or medical care, she was ill, malnourished and in desperate need of a doctor. When she arrived, she was uncertain of us and this place she’d never been. So, whether she was happy, sad, or sick, she kept her thoughts to herself. While this was challenging, we remained thankful to be able to show this precious girl the love she deserved.
Through an overflow of their own hearts, the team at The Shelter created a culture of oneness, family, and peace. They’ve created a safe place for vulnerable and orphaned children to rest and grow. To further improve their emotional and social well-being, Oasis children have the opportunity to work with a professional therapist. This doctor has been a gift as she helps children process past trauma and move towards holistic health.
One day as Emily was talking with the therapist, she began to share her story for the first time, a story more painful than most of us could imagine. By taking this courageous step forward, light began to invade where darkness once resided. Today, Emily continues to share her story and has begun to communicate how she’s feeling. Sharing that she has a stomachache, for example, is a victory. New senses of joy and freedom are being found. She knows people care and has seen that something good can come from her vulnerability. As Emily’s trust grows, we are able to provide her with an even deeper level of holistic care.
Thanks to the combined efforts of our team in Kenya and your direct support, we’re seeing more and more breakthrough among Oasis children. We’re confident this is just the beginning.
