Isn’t it just like us to think too small and just like God to show up big?
In 2004, two families felt a stirring to go to Kenya. Long story short, these two families came across 10 orphaned children who needed immediate help. The family members quickly said “Yes,” not knowing exactly what that meant, and worked with Kenyan community leaders to make a plan.
The goal was to make sure these 10 children had a safe place to live, food to eat, quality education, and ultimately a place to belong.
Ten children… They counted once, they counted twice… BUT GOD.
God brought an 11th child across their path.
Isn’t it just like us to stick to the plan and just like God to go after the ONE?
This 11th child couldn’t be ignored. He was the sweetest boy you could ever meet but very sick with HIV. He had no living parents, only a grandmother who was doing her best. This boy didn’t have a chance to get into school, let alone high school or college. He was an outcast of society.
But God.
Now, 15 years later, this young man is still struggling with his health, but he is loved and has a place where he belongs. He goes to school near his oldest brother, who helps make sure he gets the nutrition he needs and the opportunity to finish high school so he can continue thriving in life. Oasis didn’t replace his Kenyan family, but we got to be a part of their story.
His story isn’t unique; it’s God’s main story and the mission of Oasis.
This dream to reach 10 children in 2004 has multiplied to become 400 at 3 sites by the end of 2019. As we celebrate the 15-year anniversary of this dream, we realize God isn’t nearly finished yet.
Isn’t it just like us to count our resources, but just like God to make a way for one more?
