The Best Day of the Year

2025 Madaraka

In Kenya, June 1 is so much more than the first day of a new month. It’s a day of celebration and an opportunity to reflect on the history of this special country. For the students at Oasis, it’s one of the best days of the year!

On June 1, 1963, Kenya gained independence from the United Kingdom and became its own country six months later on December 12.

Every year on June 1, known as Madaraka Day, Kenya commemorates its freedom with festivals and parades throughout the country. “Madaraka” means power or self-governance, infusing the holiday with a powerful reminder of the Kenyans who advocated for independence.

To celebrate, people return home to their towns and villages to commemorate the day with friends, family, and extended family. This year, at The Well and The Shelter, our students and staff enjoyed celebrating with sports and cultural performances.

For vulnerable children in Kenya, survival is the number one priority. Education comes second to finding shelter, sourcing consistent food, and contributing to their family. For these children, there is no time for play.

At Oasis, we believe children deserve to enjoy being children. Sports, extracurricular activities, and play are significant elements of our holistic care model and an important part of healing from past trauma.

For some students, Madaraka Day at Oasis might be one of the first times they get to truly celebrate a holiday with their community. That’s why it’s so much more than a date on the calendar; it’s a milestone experience for children who can finally look beyond day-to-day survival to a brighter future.

Thank you for partnering with us to ensure children grow up knowing they are loved by God and enabled to build a more hopeful future!
