What it Takes to Feed 75 Children

Receipt v2

If you have children, “What’s for dinner?” is likely a common refrain in your home.

At Oasis for Orphans, dinner isn’t as simple as picking up a take-out order or whipping something up on the stove. It’s a full-time job to feed nourishing meals to 75 hungry children and 32 staff.

Twice a month, our incredible staff member Dorcas creates a seasonal menu and goes to local markets to purchase fruit, where she searches for in-season options to keep costs low. At wholesale shops, she places large-scale orders—like five bales of wheat flour and 10 bags of rice.

She also coordinates the delivery of other fresh groceries, such as tomatoes, onions, sweet potatoes, and cabbages, to be dropped off via motorbike.

Making sure so many children have consistent meals is not an easy task, but watching kids laughing in between bites of nourishing plates of food makes it all worth it for Dorcas.

Our on-site shelter offers year-round protection and care for the children who need it most—and, like Dorcas, our entire staff is committed to meeting the physical, emotional, spiritual, and educational needs of every child in our care.

For many children in rural Kenya, basic needs like food, shelter, and medical care aren’t a given, which limits their chances of breaking out of the cycle of poverty.

But when children have their needs met, they can focus on education and look beyond the present to dream of the future.

Thank you for making a difference in the lives of children at Oasis! You play a significant role in making sure there are meals on the table every day.

On mission together,

Jennifer Neumann
Executive Director of Oasis for Orphans

P.S. Want to learn more about what it takes to run Oasis? Every month, we offer a special campus tour via Zoom for donors. Led by a local staff member, each tour allows supporters to see their impact in action as they meet students and staff.

This month, we’re opening the invitation to anyone who would like to learn more about Oasis. If you’re interested in joining our next tour, please reach out to Laura Jacobs at [email protected] to get a Zoom link.
