Phillip* is one of the little guys at The Shelter. Although he’s only 5 years old, he’s got one big personality. Hence, his self-proclaimed nickname is “The Governa”! From the moment he joined us at The Shelter, he’s had a ready smile and quick feet.
Although he’s always been fast on his feet, Phillip was born with a congenital birth defect which made his leg grow improperly and bow inward. This caused him great pain and limited his mobility. It was clear this would lead to major physical developmental problems if it wasn’t addressed early on.
After many discussions with Kenyan and US doctors, it was decided that Phillip would undergo surgery. The first surgery would correct the bend, and the second surgery would add a lengthening device to grow the bone over time. Thanks to the incredible support of sponsors and donors, enough funds were raised to cover his medical care! The surgeries went smoothly and, through it all, Phillip remained fearless.
During his recovery, Phillip not only became a pro with his crutches (thanks to the motivation of some sweet treats), but his English also improved dramatically due to extra time spent with caretakers as his leg healed.
Today, Phillip runs fast and free. He is most often seen zooming around The Shelter site, full of life, zest, and sass! When asked what his favorite activity is, he doesn’t miss a beat as he responds, “Running!” Phillip has a fighter’s spirit and took on this process like a champ.
Without the support of our Oasis community, Phillip likely wouldn’t have been able to walk at all one day. You have changed his life in every way imaginable.
We use the term “sponsor” in the US, because people typically know what this means for our type of organization. But, an individual sponsor is part of a collective of people who come together to give what they can to change the lives of these children together. Phillip is one example of the need a sponsor’s dollars can meet.
