We didn’t know if Madaraka Day would happen this year

June 2026 Newsletter

Like many of you, we’re feeling the strain of global events here in Kenya.

Soaring gas prices have led to protests and unrest around the country.

But, in a testament to the care of our staff, children at Oasis have barely noticed.

They look forward to June 1 all year long—and this year was no different.

Every year on June 1, known as Madaraka Day, Kenya commemorates its independence from the United Kingdom with festivals and parades throughout the country. “Madaraka” means power or self-governance, infusing the holiday with a powerful reminder of the Kenyans who advocated for independence.

Celebrations across the country might have been muted this year, but students at The Well and The Shelter still got the celebration they deserved with a day-long basketball tournament. It was a joyful day of fun and competition!

Our staff go above and beyond to create a safe, nurturing environment where children can process trauma and encounter the love of God.

For some students, Madaraka Day at Oasis might be one of the first times they get to truly celebrate a holiday with their community.

That’s why it’s so much more than a date on the calendar; it’s a milestone experience for children who can finally look beyond day-to-day survival to a brighter future.

Thanks to our team, children know that, at Oasis, they are safe and loved!

P.S. On Madaraka Day and all year long, we celebrate the vibrant culture of Kenya, and we want children to grow up proud of their heritage and home.
